There is no shortage of memorable holiday destinations to choose from in Europe, but if you’re travelling as a family, Portugal and in particular the Algarve, certainly stands out.

If you have always wanted to explore Portugal but are unsure about where to spend your time, the Algarve is one region that won’t disappoint.

Why Algarve for Your Next Family Vacation?

Portugal is a beautiful country on its own, but there is something extra magical about the Algarve.

Whether you decide to fly or get there via a European cruise, you’ll be met with charming whitewashed villages, golden beaches, fantastic cuisine and all the outdoor activities your heart could desire.

Think of the Algarve as the perfect playground for kids and the ideal spot for parental relaxation.

Exploring the Algarve: How to Spend Your Time

The Algarve will most certainly be one of your most memorable family vacations. Here are some of the best activities to plan.

Beaches for Days

With so many beautiful beaches in Algarve, it can be hard to decide where to go. If you are pressed for time, here are some top picks you have to see:

  • Praia da Marinha: Think eye-catching golden cliffs and clear water – exactly what you need to sit back and relax.
  • Meia Praia: If your kids want a place to run and play, this long, sandy beach ticks all the right boxes.
  • Praia de Odeceixe: This is a great spot with both ocean waves and a calm river for swimming.

Take a Boat Tour to the Benagil Cave

Located in Lagoa, the Benagil Cave is a must-see. You can either hop on a boat or take a kayak to the cave, which has multiple impressive entrances. However, the biggest attraction is the famous ‘eye’ of Benagil cave.

This natural skylight was formed over many years and allows the sun to stream in. And, when viewed from below, the opening looks exactly like an eye (hence the name!). There is even a small beach inside the cave. If you do decide to take a boat, pick a tour operator that also offers dolphin sightings.

Visit the Ria Formosa National Park

If you’re in the mood for an easy cycle and want to burn off some excess energy, the Ria Formosa National Park (Parque Natural da Ria Formosa) is worth the visit, so be sure to pack the right clothes.

It’s also fantastic for spotting birds, like the White Stork, Oystercatchers, Eurasian Wigeon, and Flamingos.

Explore the Castle of Silves

Built on a hill in the civil parish of Silves, this famous medieval Moorish castle has an impressive history and some of the best views.

The castle is one of the best preserved monuments in the Algarve region and was home to the Romans and Arabs before it was conquered by the Portuguese king in 1189.

Also, while you’re in Silves, be sure to check out the Silves Cathedral and Quinta Do Frances Winery.

Go On an Off-Road Safari Adventure

If you want to experience the Algarve’s countryside and discover hidden villages, book one of the region’s popular off-road safaris.

Many tours include stops at waterfalls and local honey or cork farms, which makes sense since Portugal is one of the world’s largest producers of cork.

The Perfect Family Getaway

When it comes to family holidays, there’s no denying that Algarve is the ideal destination. It’s the perfect blend of adventure, relaxation and culture, and it doesn’t matter what age your kids are, they’ll be more than happy to return.
