7 Must-Have Items for Travelling With Your Dog

Travelling with your dog is always a great time, but have you spent some time considering what they need? There are some items out there that will make your next trip a lot easier. The odd thing is this: many people aren’t aware of them in the first place. So, without further ado, let’s hop in and we’ll show you 7 items you’ll want for your next road trip with your dog.

1. Seatbelt Harness

A seatbelt harness is something that more pet owners should invest in when travelling with your dog. In essence, these harnesses allow you to clip onto the seatbelt with a short tether.

In practice, they’re a practical way to control your dog when you need both of your hands and allof your attention on the road. They also protect your animal if a crash occurs, holding them in place instead of flinging them across the car when it comes to a sudden halt.

Even if you’re not traveling long distances they’re essential. It’s a shame that more pet owners don’t realize they’re readily available. Even if you’re heading out of the country they’re a good investment: you can use them in rental cars too after all.

2. Travel Crate

If you are planning on travelling with your dog for long distances, then try a travel crate. They come in both hard and soft variations, but they all have some things in common.

The main thing you’re looking for, once the right size has been found, is secure attachments for the rear of the vehicle. Basically, the crate should be held in place without any difficulty.

Even better, most of them have secure holders for both a food bowl and a water bowl. You’ll still need to stop and let your dog use the restroom on longer trips. A travel crate makes it a lot easier, however.

3. Filtered Water Bottle

Planning on going somewhere new? Hold on a minute. The risk of microbes being different from those you’re used to in another country is pretty high.

And it’s not just humans who have to deal with them. Our animals are susceptible to many of the same parasites and bacteria. Dogs can catch Diphtheria, for instance.

If you’re truly heading out far travelling with your dog, then it’s time to invest in a great filtered water bottle. Ideally, you’ll find a good onefor both of you. It may not be the first thing on many people’s minds, but having your dog catch diarrhea in an expensive hotel room is something you don’t want to deal with.

4. First Aid Kit

First aid kits should be in every car. That said if you spend some time doing research on basic emergency medicine for pets… well, you’ll realize that they have different needs.

Your human first aid kit likely doesn’t have ointment for dog’s paws, after all. Little things like that can make a big difference on your trip.

A separate pet first aid kit is a great idea. They’ll usually have things that you didn’t think of, but you can also add the pet-specific items later on. It’s up to you, but it’s one of the most important ways to keep your dog healthy. Also, don’t forget some sun cream as dogs can get sun burn too!

5. Waste Bags

Most people forget to bring waste bags with them when they hit the open road. These bags are pretty much necessary, at the very least it’s a matter of being polite.

You should plan ahead and have a sufficient amount of them for the entire trip when you leave. If you don’t, then you may end up having to leave your dog’s waste somewhere public. It’s not a pretty sight, especially if someone decides to call you out on your lack of care.

6. Your Pet’s Health Certificate

If you’re going abroad, then make sure that you have your vet’s clearance. Most airlines require it to fly, so make sure that you have your paperwork in order beforeyou leave your home.

International travel with pets is complicated enough. Different countries have different requirements, so you need to work with your vet to have everything in order beforeyou leave.

Seriously, just forgetting your health certificate can cause major issues during international travel. Triple-check that it’s with you before you head out.

7. Medications

Does your dog need medication? If so, it’s vital that you have them with you during your travels. It might seem obvious, but a lack of planning may mean an emergency veterinarian trip on the road.

Make sure that you have the meds, the prescription, and any other medical paperwork that your dog needs.to stay healthy while you’re on the road.

Hit the Road with Confidence

When you’re traveling with your animals, you need to make sure that you do some extra preparations. Look at the above items before you’re heading out, they’re all must-have. Most of all, have fun on your trip! It’ll be much easier if you bring along the right equipment.
