Twins looking out over the sea in Cornwall

Places To Visit In Cornwall With Children

We first took the Popitha Twins to Cornwall just before they were 2. It was my first visit to Cornwall too and I absolutely loved it. We stayed at a fabulous resort called Retallack Resort and it is the only website I know that has it’s own ‘twins‘ box to tick proving that this 100% caters for twins! If you are a member of TAMBA, you can get a discount too. If you would like to read my review of Retallack, click HERE.

If you are heading down to the beautiful Cornwall coastline this summer, take a look at all of the amazing places you could visit whilst there. There are so many days out in Cornwall.

Spend a day at the Eden Project

If you’re heading to Cornwall, you absolutely MUST set aside a full day to explore the Eden Project. It’s a fascinating day out for the entire family. With an aim to connect us with each other and the living world, the Eden Project explores how we can all work together towards a better future. Everything you see has nature at its heart.

It has two massive Biomes, one of which that houses the largest rainforest in captivity. You can experience four of the world’s rainforest environments and check out the treetops on the canopy walkway (be warned, the temperature can be stifling and li lol pregnant me had to take a few breaks along the way) The other is a massive Mediterranean garden which has a much more comfortable temperature and is full of the sights and scents of the med. Ahhhh!

As if all this wasn’t enough, the team at the Eden Project have really put the effort into ensuring the kids have as great a visit as you do, with so many other bits and pieces for them to explore. They can check out the giant bee sculpture, the outside gardens, the fantastic selection of wooden play equipment and even the soft play, if there’s any energy left to be burned!

The entire site is buggy-friendly and they even have land trains to transport you down the steep hill to the biomes and back again. Perfect for tired little legs.

So, it’s not the cheapest day out. Full price adult tickets are £27.50 and kids aged 5+ are £14. However, there are ways to save. By buying your ticket in advance online adult tickets are £25 and children £12.60 (family tickets are also available). Advance tickets also allow you visit as many times as you like for a whole year….so if you live close enough that you could return, or you can squeeze in a second visit while you’re in Cornwall, it certainly helps justify the cost. You can also choose not to eat in their café or restaurant and bring a lil picnic with you, which is what we did.

Although it wasn’t a cheap day out, we did spend the entire day here and felt it was worth the expenditure.

Enjoy a pasty in Padstow

Now I know Padstow has become famous in recent years thanks to a certain celebrity chef and the seafood draws a LOT of visitors to the town. But for us, grabbing a proper Cornish pasty and sitting looking at the harbour was perfection. We had heard The Chough Bakery  is THE place to go for one of the best Cornish pasties in the region, so of course we had to check them out. Now it was my first EVER Cornish Pasty so I can’t actually speak as to whether it was the best, but it was certainly up there with some of the best steak bridies (the Scottish equivalent) that I’ve ever had.

If there’s any room left after your pasty (they are genuinely MASSIVE), then grab an ice cream at The Ice Cream Parlour and sit outside and enjoy the view.

You can then wile away a few hours checking out he boats in the harbour and exploring the town.

Explore Wadebridge

We stayed in the beautiful little town of Wadebridge and made sure we had a day exploring our immediate surroundings. The town centre has a fabulous selection of independent shops including Granny Wobbly’s Fudge Pantry for some homemade fudgy treats!

For a great walk/cycle head along the Camel Trail which leads all the way to Padstow (there is bike hire available in Padstow). The trail is really scenic but importantly for those with littles…it’s also really flat so great for all ages.

Go Seal Spotting in St Ives

St Ives, deserving of its many MANY awards, is one of the most beautiful seaside towns we have ever visited. We spent a day here and were lucky enough to spot some seals in the shore! Unfortunately we didn’t manage to get any photos of this so you’ll just have to trust me on that one.

The town has a selection of beaches to choose from, each with its own personality so you could actually come here for an entire week and experience something different each day.

We had a picnic lunch on Harbour Beach and enjoyed lazing and checking out the boats while the tide was out. We then headed along to Porthminster Beach for some paddling and sandcastle building. We also had a little jaunt to Balamuz Beach where we spotted our seals! We didn’t make it Porthwiggen Beach unfortunately but you should pop this on your list if quaint beach huts are your thing. It looks stunning.

Do be sure to check out the rest of the town too as there are wonderful cobbled streets, beautiful seaside houses and some great shops, cafes and restaurants. We ended out day with traditional pub grub at the Lifeboat Inn on the harbour. Lovely food, good selection for little ones and fast service…perfect! We have also been told that St Ives in Winter is just as beautiful.

Watch the surfers in Newquay

No trip to Cornwall is complete without surfing is it? I so wanted to get a surf lesson while I was there but unfortunately my pregnancy vetoed that so we chose to watch instead. Newquay is famous for it’s surfing and it’s easy to see why. Both the beaches and the water are just stunning. There are a bunch of surf schools in Newquay and most accommodate children (aged 7 and over and able to swim) if you do fancy giving it a try.

Hunt for the Bodmin Beast

The beaches in Cornwall are so fantastic that it can be easy for forget about some of the other gems in the region. Take some time to visit and explore Bodmin Moor. There are some great nature trails which the kids will love and you might even spot the infamous Bodmin Beast.

Head on a journey through Cardinham Woods with The Highway Rat

While you’re in the Bodmin area, get yourself along to Cardinham Woods where the kids can complete an activity trail with Julia Donaldson’s The Highway Rat. You can buy an accompanying activity pack from the café before you start the trail for £3 which has an activity leaflet to help the kids on route. Start the trail at Lady Vale walk and is around 1.5m long. Before you head home you have to sample the delights of Woods café. We enjoyed amazing coffee and cake here and the surroundings are stunning.

Get wet at Waterworld Newquay

If you happen to have a rainy day whilst you’re in Cornwall why not head along to Waterworld in Newquay for some fun.  With two slides, a fountain and an indoor snake, it’ll keep the kids entertained for ages.

Meet the animals at Old Macdonnals Farm

This is a great day out, especially for those with younger children. It’s small enough to be able to keep an eye on little ones, but still jam packed with things to see and do, including meeting (and perhaps even feeding the animals), pony rides, tractors, trampolines and even crazy golf. Tickets are only £7 pp (under 2s go free) so it’s a good value day out. Take a picnic and enjoy!

Go rock pooling in Port Gaverne

We happened to stumble upon this beach during our visit and it was perfect for rock pooling. Sheltered and quiet, the kids were able to explore safely, and it was easy to keep an eye on them. I’d definitely recommend heading here with your buckets and some nets to see what you can find!

This is a guest post written by Claire from A Mum More Ordinary.
Hi, I’m Claire, a self-employed mum of two from Scotland. Like lots of other people I felt that I’d maybe lost a little of myself when I became a mum. I don’t mean that in any kind of regretful way, just that my hobbies and interests kind of fell by the wayside a little. Starting A Mum More Ordinary was my way of doing something for me, whilst also still talking about them (because let’s face it, it’s pretty much all you talk about when you become a parent). A lover of order, lists, travel, books and theatre, I blog about our family life, travel and our adventures. Hope to see some over you over on the blog soon.’
