Austria is the land of beautiful alpine scenery, mountains and flowers and it is the perfect place for a family holiday in the summer. There are plenty of activities to keep families entertained in Austria from zip-lining, mountain climbing, horse riding and llama trekking. The spectacular scenery alone will have you wanting to return year after year, the lakes, mountains and even the buildings here are all beautiful. Plus there is so much going on for the kids, you just won’t want to leave – we didn’t.  A Summer in Austria is what we all need!

The region of Tirol is a western Austrian state in the Alps that is famous for its ski resorts, historic sites and traditional folk style. In summer, Wilder Kaiser offers plenty of enjoyment for a family holiday with many places to visit and fantastic vistas that will make everybody feel happy. The Kaiser mountains are seen to the north and in the south there are smaller mountains and hills, offering easier hikes for the family – it’s just beautiful.

There are four main towns – Going, Ellmau, Scheffau and Söll so there’s always plenty of things to do in Wilder Kaiser. The mountainous area in the east of Tirol has lots of walking trails and children can look forward to six outdoor adventure play areas, including the KaiserWelt in Scheffau, Elmi’s Zauberwelt in Ellmau and the Erlebnispark Alpinolino in Westendorf. Nature lovers will love “Moor & More” in Going, an area of wetland and the region also has a number of indoor and outdoor swimming pools such as the Kaiserbad Ellmau.

How to get to Wilder Kaiser

The Wilder Kaiser region can be easily reached by plane from three airports. It can be reached via Salzburg (approx. 1 hour away), Munich (approx. 1.5 hours away) or Innsbruck (approx. 1 hour away). The trains of the Austrian, Swiss and German railways will transport you to the heart of the Alps, the central train station in Innsbruck (Innsbruck Hauptbahnhof) is one of Austria’s busiest train stations and from here you can also travel all over Austria and Europe by train.

Summers at Wilder Kaiser can be hot, with temperatures sometimes reaching 30 degrees celsius or more. The summer evenings are usually cooler, precipitation is quite evenly distributed over the entire year.

Things to do in Wilder Kasier Pony Alm

 

Pony Alm is a fun day out for all the family. If you take the Astbergbahn chairlift, you can go horse riding at the Wilder Kaiser Pony Alm. There are 20 ponies and a big kids playground. The children can enjoy a pony ride and explore the area around the Astberg.

More than just ponies will greet you on the Astberg – many other furry friends look forward to meeting their new pals in the petting zoo!

No reservation is required for pony riding. The maximum weight for pony riding is 40 kg.

As well as Pony Alm, there are gorgeous walks where you can take in the breathtaking panorama of the Wilder Kaiser lake in the Astbergsee, the lake is known as the “mirror of the Kaiser”.

The Realm of the Giant – Swarovski Crystal Worlds

Since opening in 1995, the Swarovski Crystal Worlds in Wattens have inspired visitors from all over, this unique excursion destination is one of Austria’s most popular tourist attractions. Step through the head of the crystal giant, which was designed by Andrè Heller, and enter a magical world. There is the Chamber of Wonder with a giant and visitors of all ages are welcome in the playtower, playground, maze and on the Carousel.

Going Bathing Lake is located right next to the forest edge and offers panoramic views of the Kaisergebirge mountain range. Fed by the springs of the Wilder Kaiser mountain range, there is a white beach with a separate amazing children’s play area, pirate ships  and non-swimmer zones with a slide.

For the thrill seekers, there’s two fun slides and test your balance on the wobble stones. In summer, the lake is lovely and warm.

There is also a cafe on the lake too.

Moor and More

Close to the Gasthof Römerhof in St. Johann in Tirol, you will find Moor and More. It’s  a children’s paradise, is hiding in the woods at the Röhrermoos – a gigantic playground. There are water games; a maze, a giant swing, a climbing tower and much more to entertain the little ones.

 

Kaiserbad Ellmau

The Kaiserbad Ellmau swimming pool is situated at the foot of the majestic Wilder Kaiser mountain range. There is an indoor adventure pool and lazy river leading out to the outdoor pool and its own organic-pond. Outside there is a fantastic water playground in addition to summer and winter slides. The thermal area has a herbal sauna with camomile steam. There is a eucalyptus grotto or Finnish sauna in the Tirolean log cabin too.

 

Ellmi’s World of Magic

Ellmi’s Magic World on the Hartkaiser mountain in Ellmau invites kids on a journey in the footsteps of the sorcerer’s apprentice, Ellmi, who was transformed into a giant frog by goblins. There is an enchanted forest with talking trees, goblin’s hut and rainforest harbours. Ellmi’s children’s play park has a trampoline, climbing carousel, maze, playground, swings, and much more. You can learn all about the many flowers, medicinal plants and herbs on the nature trails and in the botanical garden.

 

Llama Trekking on the Koglhof

The Koglhof Llama Trek is set in the Kaiser mountains in Ellmau in Tirol at 850 metres and has been owned by the Oberhofer family since 1942. Everybody gets to lead a llama (even the smallest ones!) to the foot of the mountains and the llamas carry your rucksacks for you. The llama trek is a fun way to experience the mountains and nature of Austria. Kids and adults love it!

We went on a private trek, which you can too. This is perfect for families with younger children as the length can be adapted to your children.

 

Ahornsee Lake

The 11-m deep Ahornsee Lake provides guests and locals a refreshing place for summer fun. With an area of more than 10,000 m², the bathing lake is also used in winter as a snow-making reservoir for Hochsöll. The Ahornsee lake has four bathing bridges, a beach volleyball court, showers, a kiosk, a children’s area with a reservoir, and water stations as well as deckchairs and sunshades.

The Lanzenhof is a rustic inn with traditional, down-to-earth cuisine and boutique rooms on the first floor. Right next to the Lanzenhof is the guesthouse, which accommodates guests with its individual rooms and suites and a wellness area. There are two houses with a total of 30 beds in the middle of the Kitzbühel Alps at the foot of the Kaiser Mountains. There is a rich breakfast buffet and in the evening exquisite dishes from the kitchen and cellar.

 

Die Ellmau Alm

In the Ellmauer Alm they will spoil you with typical Tyrolean delicacies and hearty dishes from the Austrian kitchen. Enjoy the culinary delights in the rustic old wood parlour with an open fireplace or on the large sun terrace with a view of the Wilder Kaiser mountain scenery. The dishes on the menu are rustic and the atmosphere is lovely. Aprés ski and live music are then on the program until late at night.
