If you are planning some fun outdoor activities with your family, you might want to consider visiting a maize maze. The UK maize mazes all tend to open around late July and run through the whole of the summer holidays into September and some keep them for October Halloween events too.

What is a Maize Maze?
A maize maze (or corn maze) is a maze cut out of a corn field. “Maize” means corn and “Maze” means a labyrinth or a confusing area in which it is easy to get lost. A maize maze is life-size with miles of trails and you find your way out by walking the trails that are cut into the field with big maze.
How are Maize Mazes Made?
Maize Mazes are made by cross-drilling the field which means they plant seeds in one direction and then they go back over the field at a 90 degree angle. Planting twice as many seeds means the crop is denser making for a better maze. The actual building of a maize maze is about a three-month process. Did you know it takes almost 650,000 maize plants to create a five-acre maze?

The first attraction at Lakelands was the amazing corn maze and it is still the highlight for many during the months of July to September. As well as the maize mazes there are two permanent all weather mazes – a wooden Panel Maze and the indoor Bunny Burrows tube maze! This year the Maize maze will be in the shape of a Sunflower.
There are two Maize Mazes, the mini maze (takes between 15-25 minutes to complete) and the main maze (takes between 1 ½ – 2 ½ hrs to complete but there are exit points along the route if needed).

A short while ago, Penshurst made the difficult decision not to grow the Maize Maze this year and to delay until 2022. The land where they normally plant the Maize Maze is being put to good use in its stead. Taken over by our tenant farms at Hall Place, spring malting barley has been drilled which is often used for brewing or malting whisky and vinegar. So whilst they may not have a Maize Maze this year, knowing they are helping in the production of whiskey, or the best accompaniment for a hearty portion of chips is certainly comforting!

This exciting summer event, running from mid-July to early September, promises something for the whole family to enjoy. In the maze, you will be challenged by quiz boards for adults and children, which will also help you navigate. There are bridges and towers so you can get a great view of the maze. Again this year we will have two mazes, our main maze with nine question boards and a mini maze for little legs!
They also have a large open courtyard which features some quick six-minute mazes, a rest area with refreshments and the popular children’s ride-on electric tractors. You’ll also find a Nerf gun zone and a big shed with climbing bales, air hockey, table football and table tennis.
